My senior capstone project, Everlight: The Memory Lamp, explores how light can capture the emotional experience of memory fading and shifting over time. I reimagined the traditional picture book by transforming old film slides into illuminated sculptures, allowing images to slowly fade as they are lit. This process mirrors the way our memories soften and blur while still remaining a part of us.

Light as a Tool for Emotional Connection

Memory is ever-changing—fading, shifting, and sometimes blurring over time. The Memory Lamp captures this fluid nature by transforming old film slides into light-filled sculptures. This process symbolizes how memories, though altered by time, remain an integral part of who we are, lighting the way forward with a connection to the past.

Light as Comfort

Research shows that darkness can heighten feelings of sadness and isolation, making it harder for people to process emotions. The Memory Lamp counters this effect by using light as a means of emotional healing and connection. By transforming old film slides into illuminated sculptures, this project seeks to not only preserve memories but also provide comfort and warmth, counteracting the emotional chill that darkness often brings.

Illuminating Love and Loss

Grief can feel heavy, especially in the dark. Everlight stands as a tribute to those we’ve lost, offering more than just a physical light source. The lamp transforms the emotional weight of memory into a comforting presence. With the warmth of its glow, it provides solace, ensuring that even in times of sorrow, there is always light a reminder that memories can continue to brighten our lives, even when they feel distant.

Light as a Tool for Emotional Connection

Research shows that light serves as a natural emotional regulator, especially in difficult moments. The National Institute of Mental Health reports that "artificial lighting, particularly natural light, has the power to lift mood and combat symptoms of depression" (NIMH, 2020). Through the gentle glow of the Everlight, memories are illuminated, providing not only visual beauty but also a source of emotional comfort during times of sadness or grief.

How can the transformation of film slides, illuminated by light, evoke the emotional experience of memory fading and shifting over time?
